ROCK LOTTERY 2012!!

What if everything you did, you put yourself on a 24-hour deadline? This was the idea at our first ever Rock Lottery held at the Waldorf hotel on Jan 29th, 2012. We took 25 of our favourite Vancouver musicians, gave them some breakfast and coffee, randomly pulled names from a hat to assemble five totally new bands, and gave them a day and a half to write a 15-minute set.

The Rock Lottery was also a triple-whammy effort from The Association of Very Good Ideas, Instruments of Change, and Girls Rock Camp Vancouver. How can you not create something awesome with all three of these organizations involved? All funds raised went to the creation of a new Ladies Rock Camp to be held in a women’s prison. For more information, visit http://forbiddenflutes.com/instrumentsOfChange.html

To listen to or download the live-from-the-floor recordings from the show, please visit Life After Radio (click on it and it’ll take you there).

Thanks to all you amazing musicians and volunteers who made the magic happen! And thanks to The Waldorf!

A Quick Description of Camp

Girls Rock camp Vancouver is held in partnership with the Urban Native Youth Association (UNYA). We thank them for their constant support and kindness.

Camp runs from 9am to 4pm each day, with instrument instruction in the morning, lunch (provided), and band practices and workshops in the afternoon. On Day 1, campers will get a chance to meet one another and form bands, who they will practice with throughout the week. By Friday, they will have written a song together and learned the basics of their instruments, and then it’s off to the Showcase on Saturday for the big performance.

All instruments are provided by GRCV. Campers will indicate which instrument they wish to play on their application forms. GRCV cannot provide childcare before or after camp, as our space has been graciously donated by the Urban Native Youth Association, and must be vacated for other programming after camp. Campers must be picked up by 4pm, and all campers who intend to leave early must have a parent’s permission to do so. Please see our camper application for more detailed information.

Rock Camp is held at the Urban Native Youth Association Building, 1618 East Hastings Street (at Commercial Drive). Please DO NOT SEND ANYTHING TO THIS ADDRESS, send to address provided on the application.

Please consider donating to our organization by clicking on the button above! Your generous donations will help keep camp accessible to everyone.

You can also help by donating functioning music gear, especially amps, guitars, bass guitars, and pedals. To donate, email gear@girlsrockcampvancouver.ca
